Reporting of dredging sites connected to disposal events became mandatory starting from 2023 data, when the HELCOM Guidelines for Management of Dredged Material at Sea was updated. Before this, reporting of dredging sites was not mandatory, but several Contracting Parties report information about dredging activities. The dredging sites are grouped by spatial data type to point, line and polygon datasets. The dredging site includes a link to corresponding site where the material has been deposited. The data format is defined in the HELCOM Guidelines for management of dredged material (https://helcom.fi/action-areas/industrial-municipal-releases/dredging/) Data quality aspects Two separate quality assurance processes of old reported data 2006-2016 have been carried out during 2018. In addition annually reported data is verified by Contracting Party before making the data publicly available. Attribute "quality flag" in the data provides information on the quality status of individual depositing/dredging activity. Denmark Denmark can only quality assure data from 2013 onward. Denmark cannot review the raw data for 2009 and 2010. The reason for this, lies in the history of the monitoring of dredged material in Danish waters: Before 2013, the responsible authority was decentralised in Denmark, meaning that the different regions had very different formats for reporting of dredged material. In 2013, all dredging activities were centralised to the then national agency of nature. Thus, Danish data older than 2013 has been removed from HELCOM database. Sweden Information on the calculation of contaminants prior to 2013 is scattered, and not possible to trace fully. Data from 2013 onwards is quality assured.
