HELCOM marine area (level 1)
This dataset includes assessment units in scale 1. HELCOM Marine area 2022 (No division: the whole Baltic Sea encompassing the entire HELCOM area) as defined in the HELCOM Monitoring and assessment strategy ( https://helcom.fi/publications/monitoring-and-assessment-strategy/)
The marine area of the Baltic Sea is sub-divided for regional monitoring and assessment purposes. The scale of sub-division to be chosen may differ depending on purpose, e.g. monitoring and assessment of mobile marine mammals may require the whole Baltic Sea scale while assessment of eutrophication may require the scale of open sea combined with water body or -type in the coastal waters. The scale to be used should be chosen among the four HELCOM scales and jointly agreed. Other sub-divisions, for example aggregations of units, can be agreed and used provided they use the agreed boundaries and remain within the boundaries and use the nomenclature of the described hierarchical system.

The HELCOM marine area shape file was made by cutting out the "sea area" from a coastline polygon. The edge in the kattegat area is based on agreed boundaries as defined by the HELCOM Combine monitoring programme.
An additional feature, a fjord "Schlei" was added to German Baltic Sea coast 8.8.2008
Three Danish fjords were added 28.11.2008 from a raster data set "batymatry", which is product of the EU Interreg project BALANCE.
This dataset was updated in September 2017 following the update of http://www.helcom.fi/Documents/Action%20areas/Monitoring%20and%20assessment/Monitoring%20and%20assessment%20strategy/Monitoring%20and%20assessment%20strategy.pdf as agreed in https://portal.helcom.fi/meetings/STATE - CONSERVATION 6-2017-412/MeetingDocuments/Outcome of State and Conservation 6-2017.pdf. Islands under 1 ha have been removed from the dataset and polygon shape have been simplified with bend simplify tool with 100m maximum allowable offset in September 2017.
The dataset was updated again in 2022 with changes collected for HELCOM assessment units to be applied in HOLAS III, presented on State and Conservation 15-2021, document 3J-94: https://portal.helcom.fi/meetings/STATE%20-%20CONSERVATION%2015-2021-843/MeetingDocuments/3J-94-Rev.2%20Summary%20of%20HELCOM%20assessment%20unit%20changes%20for%20HOLAS%20III.pdf
In august 2022 the dataset was updated to incorporate changes on the Danish coast.
