Benthic habitats integrated assessment result HOLAS 3

The dataset presents the status of the benthic habitats. The assessment is carried out by integrating the results of two state and one pressure indicator: State of the soft-bottom macrofauna community, Oxygen debt and Cumulative impact from physical pressures on benthic biotopes (CumI), respectively. The spatial unit of the assessment is comprised of areas resulting from the overlay of the separate indicators data sets.

A relatively simple integration approach was applied for overlaying the state and pressure indicators, by using a decision tree with specific rules to determine the final status for the overlapping units. The physical loss areas, taken from the Spatial Pressure and Impact Assessment, are clipped out from the assessment and presented as separate units. The lineage section further down gives a more detailed description of the methodology.

Input data

The results of the CumI (pressure indicator) was used directly in the assessment, the spatial unit in the assessment is based on the MSFD broad habitat types and HELCOM assessment unit level 2. These areas were intersected with the human activities layers to produce the final polygons (areas). Cumi result categories were converted into numerical values for the assessment.

The state component of the assessment is based on a single data layer, where all state indicators are spatially integrated (no overlap) based on their relevance in terms of depth and bottom habitat. The numerical value of the indicator evaluation was used for the assessment.

Spatial analysis

A GIS overlay was be carried out to establish the respective polygons where different indicator components. Where a single indicator evaluation was present in any given polygon, that evaluation and confidence evaluation was applied as the overall result. A confidence penalty was however be applied to the overall outcomes.

Where two indicator components were available (i.e. CumI and one of the state components) an integration of the scores was applied based on specific rules. The rules essentially meant that the risk/impact evaluation by CumI was only applied to reduce the state assessment outcome and never to increase the outcome of the state component. The following rules were used (cumi status/state status/rule): Fail/Fail/40:60 weighting; Fail/Achieve/40:60 weighting; Fail/No input/CumI direct; No input/Fail/State direct; Achieve/Fail/State direct; Achieve/Achieve/40:60 weighting; Achieve/No input/CumI direct; No input/Achieve/State direct. Confidence in the overall assessment was calculated in the same manner. Additional information can be found in the HELCOM thematic assessment on Biodiversity.
