Extraction of sand and gravel 2016-2021 (HOLAS 3)
The dataset contains sand and gravel extraction activity during 2016–2021. The dataset is based on data submitted by HELCOM Contracting Parties in response to a data call. The dataset contains active sand and gravel extraction sites as reported by Estonia, Finland and Germany.

The dataset was created in order to update the information for the Baltic Sea Region for the HELCOM Assessments. Data was collected by the HELCOM Secretariat during 2022. The dataset contains information on submarine cables in the Baltic Sea. Data were reported by Estonia, Finland, Germany and Russia. Data were reported by Poland in a non-spatial format, which could not be integrated into this dataset.
National remarks:
Estonia: Data on the extraction of sand and curative mud in Estonian marine area (coastal waters) are provided for the period 2016-2021. Currently, there are 5 active marine mineral (sand or mud) deposit sites, exctraction was carried out at 4 of them during the assessment period. No gravel extraction is carried out from the sea in Estonia.
Annual reporting on extracted mineral deposits is a legal obligation of environmental permit (extraction permit) owners. Reported data are validated and quality assured by the Environmental Board (issuer of the extraction permit) and Maa-Amet (the processor of the mineral deposits list). Finland: Areas are based on data from Metsähallitus. Two areas were mainly in use during 2004-2008. Small-scale extraction occurred later (2021).
Germany: Extraction of sand and gravel for commercial purposes and coastal protection. Data set in a good quality consist of *shp datafiles.
National data provider:
Estonia: Estonian Land Board; (Ministry of the Environment)
Finland: Finnish Environment Institute
Germany: Bergamt Stralsund, mining authority Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
